Bath Time

Tuesday, June 26, 2007

Every night as part of our bedtime ritual, we give Kyla a bath. She loves the water and smiles and laughs the entire time. Plus she smells so yummy afterwards! Tonight Gimu decided to join in the fun!

Hi Daddy - I Miss You!

John is on a business trip to Florida this week and Kyla is really missing him. As you can see they like to snuggle up and take naps together!

Hiya Scotland!

Friday, June 22, 2007

Kyla's Aunt Janice, Cousins Jade and Eva and Auntie Pamela are coming to visit next week, so in honor of their visit Kyla took pictures in her special Scotland outfit (made in America with Scottish parts). As she's half Scottish, she's very proud of the Saltire on her onesie! She won't get to see Scotland until Christmastime, so it's wonderful that her Scottish relatives are coming to visit. Kyla sends special kisses to her Gran, Papa, Uncle Iain, Uncle Robert, Aunt Gail, Uncle Andrew, Aunt Trisha, Cousin Amber and Cousin Ryan!! xxxxxxxxxx

p.s. Nobu says hi to his pal Papa - he misses all of his walks with you!

2 Month Check-Up

Kyla had her 2 month check-up yesterday and she is perfect of course! Her latest measurements are:

Weight: 11lbs 5oz (75th percentile for kids her age)
Length: 21-1/2 inches (25th)
Head Circumference: 15-1/4 inches (50th)

Kyla also got a series of vaccinations with 3 shots and 1 oral. She did fabulously with all of them and wasn't even bothered by the first 2 shots. The 3rd one contained a medecine that stings so she screamed after that one, but the oral one had a flavor she liked, so she stopped crying after that. It was hard to see her get the shots and be in pain, but after the whole surgical nightmare John and I could handle something minor like this! She's been a bit fussy since her shots (understandably of course), but a little Tylenol and she's back to her mellow happy self.

It's so hard to believe our little girl is already 2 months old!

Can't Stop

Wednesday, June 20, 2007

So, I pretty much just can't stop taking pictures of Kyla. Here are some recent ones - notice how her hair is getting lighter. I've also included one of Nobu, who gets jealous if you don't take some shots of him too!

We also had some professional picures taken. Here is the link to view them http://www.alisoneden.com/ Alison really captured some of the funny faces Kyla makes! Just click on "clients" and type in "kyla" as the password. We plan on buying the disc, so just let us know if there are ones you'd like and we'll send them to you.

Krista's Birthday Celebration

Saturday, June 16, 2007

Today we celebrated my 37th birthday with a BBQ and pool party at the house. It was so wonderful to get together with friends, relax and enjoy the day. The weather wasn't ideal - 80s and cloudy for a pool party, but a few of us got in including Kyla and her dad. Kyla got dressed for the occassion in her black "Diva" outfit for her mummy (urban babies do wear black!). Did I already say how super cute she is?!

Latest Milestones

Thursday, June 14, 2007

Kyla is getting to be such a big girl! She has started smiling and laughing (finally caught it on film), but she is also finding her "voice". She's now doing a kind of "uh, um, ah" sounds when she is looking at something interesting to her. She sometimes varies the pitch or puts a few sounds together. It's very cute and makes us wonder what she is trying to communicate. Of course most of things she's finds interesting are the armoire leg, people's faces and her all time favorite thin air (remember the movie "Sixth Sense" - yes our baby girl sees dead people).
Kyla has also learned to hold her pacifier in her mouth. I guess the continual sucking to keep the thing in while she's trying to fall asleep gets tiring, so she now holds it with her hand (see pictures above). The handle on the back is perfect for her to get her fingers and thumb around. Can you say brilliant!!

Post-Surgery Follow-Up

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

Kyla had her post-surgery follow-up this afternoon and she got a clean bill of health. She is 10lbs 11oz (in full clothes and a wet diaper) which means she gained 2-1/2 lbs in 2 weeks! No doubt because she's been eating 4-6oz per feeding!! Her incisions are also healing nicely (2 small ones on her belly and one in her belly-button) and are so tiny you can barely see them. The last picture shows the scars - they are the two small red dots to the left and right about 1 inch above her belly button. You can barely tell the difference between the scars and the slight rash on her belly/chest

Dr Josephs also told us that by now her body has reabsorbed the pyloric muscle overgrowth, so she has a regular muscle now between her stomach and intestine. This overgrowth won't occur again, so her digestive tract will be normal from now on. Great News!

First Swim!

Monday, June 11, 2007

Kyla had her first swim in the pool today! It finally warmed up enough to be comfortable for her and she really seemed to like it. She kicked her legs and opened and closed her hands in the water - of course she also tried to lick the water off her hands! She did a great job floating on her back (with mummy holding her of course). It was so much fun watching her face to see how she was processing the experience. If she is anything like her mum, she'll be a water-baby before long. And of course she looked too cute in her bathing suit!

Starting To Smile

Sunday, June 10, 2007

Kyla is doing great 2 weeks after her surgery. She is eating like a horse and gaining weight rapidly. She hasn't had an official weigh in (not until her 2 month appointment), but she is definitely getting heavier and she's starting to get chubby thighs and cheeks. Which of course her mummy squeezes whenever possible because they are too cute!

Her latest milestone is smiling and that toothless grin is so adorable! She really gets going when you tickle her chin or cheeks and just starts giggling and grinning. We've tried to get a picture, but we always seem to miss it. The first one at the top is about as close as we could get.

We've been trying to get out and about 4-5 days a week and Kyla is the best baby. She usually falls asleep in her car seat or just plays happily where ever we go. She doesn't really cry except when she is really hungry and as soon as you pick her up or give her the bottle, she stops immediately. I don't know how we got so lucky! She definitely has John's personality and people always comment on how mellow she is.

First Post - Kyla surgery

Saturday, June 2, 2007

Thought this would be a great way to keep everyone updated on our little family since Kyla joined. Of course for pictures there is also the website (www.kylabeatricescott.com).

As many of you know, Kyla had to have surgery on Monday, 5/28 (Memorial Day) for a condition called pyloric stenosis, which is a thickening of the pyloric muscle between the stomach and the small intestine. The muscle normally opens and closes allowing food to pass from the stomach to the small intestine, but when it becomes thickened the food can't get through and so backs up and the baby vomits. It is one of the more common surgical conditions in newborns (although usually affects males) and the reason why Kyla had been projectile vomiting the week prior. The thickening of the muscle happens after birth and usually begins to cause vomiting the 3rd - 6th week of life.

As for how we ended up having surgery, here is the story:

On Sunday evening we realized Kyla was not acting her usual self. She had only had 2 wet diapers the entire day (6-8 is normal) and she was more lethargic and not really wanting to eat. We were worried she was getting dehydrated so we called the pediatrician. Since a newborn's system can be very fragile and go down hill quickly with dehydration, she sent us to the emergency room. We got there about 9pm and they saw us pretty much right away. Of course they needed to draw blood and start and IV (just in case she needed fluids) so Kyla was poked and prodded until they could get a good vein. Needless to say John and I cried during the entire time - it was so traumatic seeing our baby in pain! The ER doctor suspected she might have pyloric stenosis, but unfortunately we could not get an ultrasound until the following morning. At 2am the lab work finally came back and Kyla was not technically dehydrated so they took the IV out and sent us home. However, physically she was - although we didn't know that until the next morning.

We got home at 3am Monday morning and were back up at 6:30am to get the ultrasound at 8am. The ultrasound tech did 2 measurements that took all of 2 minutes and we had our diagnosis of pyloric stenosis. They admitted us to the hospital immediately to have surgery that day. Poor Kyla had only had 1oz of formula at midnight and did not show any signs of wanting to eat. She would just lay in our arms and suck on her pacifier. She was clearly not doing well and when they tried to get an IV started in the hospital, her veins kept blowing because she was dehydrated (mummy was VERY angry at the ER doctor for not giving Kyla fluids when she was there because although the blood work came back ok, looking at her you could tell something was wrong!).

Kyla went in for surgery at 1pm that day and handing over our daughter to the nurses to be taken to the OR was one of the most heart-wrenching things John and I have ever experienced. The surgery took 1 hour and she did great! The surgeon made 3 tiny incisions in her belly for the camera and the instruments and made a cut in the pyloric muscle that will allow it to open and let food pass to the small intestine. The anesthesiologist was able to get the IV started right before surgery, so the extra fluids really helped her bounce back. Kyla was able to eat about 2 hours after the surgery and took 3oz! She kept that down and ate like a champ the rest of the day. We were able to go home the next day at noon and Kyla has been the picture of health ever since.

We are so thrilled that our little girl is back to being happy and healthy! She lost about 6 oz from the week prior (down to 8lbs, 4oz), but she should regain that very quickly the way she is eating now. There are no long term effects from this condition and Kyla will have a normal digestive tract.

A special thank you to our family and friends who called and came by the hospital to see how she was doing. Your support really helped us get through those days!
